Race Flashback: 2011 Festival Foods Turkey Trot

I know, I still have one more vacation post due to you but since it’s Thanksgiving, I figured today’s post could be a bit more topical and talk about my Turkey Trot this morning!

Sister and I drove home to my parents home last night so we would be closer to the Trot this morning, which was in Fond du Lac.  We left the house about an hour before the race started to have time to pick up our badges and t-shirts.  The race was actually very well organized, which was kind of surprising as we only paid $18 for it!  It was chip timed and included a long sleeve t-shirt and a mini pie (we passed on this).  By the time we got all badged up and ready to go, they were giving the 5 minute warning for the National Anthem and I still had shirts that needed to go back to the car so needless to say, I got a little warm up sprint in this am :)  But I made it back with just enough time to take 5 pictures and then we were off!

The race started at 8am and the weather was surprisingly decent for a late November morning in Wisconsin.  I was actually wearing short sleeves and capris which was not what the majority of people were wearing but I ended up being very glad I was not wearing long pants, coats, ear muffs and mittens!  Even Sister was wishing she had just worn a t-shirt or tank top.

The race we chose to run was the 5 mile and also the longest distance offered this morning.  I remember getting to the 1 mile point pretty quickly but then somehow missed all the other mile markers until mile 4!  Right before hitting mile 4, I was thinking how this was the longest mile in the world or maybe I missed mile 2 but there was no way I missed everything so I was thinking about slowing my pace for a bit because I was getting tired… but then sure enough!  A 4 mile line appeared and I was very thankful that I was just in some sort of daze and missed the other mile markers!!

I think I kept a pretty good pace that last mile and managed to speed over the finish line when the clock said 42 something which totally shocked me!  I was secretly hoping to be under 45 minutes but I will gladly take 3 less than that!  My official time was 41:41 so a PR for 5 mile races!  (Side note: I have been on quite the roll of getting repeat numbers in my race times – haha)  LOL!  I have never done a 5 mile before so technically, even a 3 hour race would have been a PR ;)

After finishing, I walked over to find water and a banana for Sister and me and then walked back to try to see her finish.  I had my hands a bit full and was getting some funny looks from people but oh well, they can get over it!  I managed to get back to the finish line just in time to see Sister run speedily across!  She finished in less than 50 minutes which was a total speed run for her!  And a good 1 minute/mile less on average than our 10k a few weeks ago!  We must have had some yummy rice cakes this morning ;)

So Happy to be done!!

After snapping a few more finish line pictures, we walked back to the car to drive home for some breakfast!  We are actually not having our turkey dinner until tomorrow so we will have to find some other kind of tasty refueling food for eating later today :)

Glad you didn't wear your thermals?

I hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving 2011!  Yum for some good eats!!

This year I am most thankful for our recent family vacation and my little puppy dog, Crosby.  What are you most thankful for this year?

Someone's not very thankful that Target sells dog jammies...
